Senior Manager (Engineering) (Job no. 9130)

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has recently established the Aerodynamics and Acoustics Facility (AAF).  The AAF hosts a large low-speed wind tunnel, an anechoic chamber, a reverberation chamber, and various other flow-acoustic facilities, catering to a wide range of research needs both locally and beyond.  The AAF is seeking a high-caliber candidate to take up the position of Senior Manager (Engineering).

Reporting to the AAF Director, the appointee will be expected to:

  • Assist the Director and the management committee in implementing plans and policies, and serving as the key communication bridge with internal and external stakeholders;
  • Lead and manage the AAF technical teams to support the University's research activities, teaching and learning, public engagement and strategic development initiatives;
  • Liaise with various University parties, such as the Health, Safety and Environmental Office, Purchasing Office and Campus Management Office, to ensure the safe and effective operation of the AAF;
  • Lead the planning and execution of aerodynamic and acoustic tests to acquire high-quality datasets and to verify and validate the datasets, monitor research progress, and troubleshoot;
  • Oversee the design, construction and instrumentation of wind-tunnel models and related equipment;
  • Manage workflows, schedules, contractors and budgets to ensure the timely delivery of high-quality services while complying with health and safety regulations;
  • Organize budgets and equipment procurement in compliance with University regulations;
  • Optimize the use of laboratory and office space; and
  • Keep abreast with the latest developments in flow and acoustic technologies to maintain the competitiveness of the AAF.

The appointee will also serve as the primary customer interface to:

  • Collaborate with users to understand their research/project needs and propose feasible and effective solutions to help them achieve their objectives; and
  • Liaise with AAF clients and to manage customer relations.

Post-doctoral Fellow / Research Assistant (Job no. 8669)

The Aerodynamics and Acoustics Facility at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is seeking highly motivated and talented individuals to join its team as Post-doctoral Fellow(s) or Research Assistant(s).

The successful candidate will work with the team to develop new technologies in high-tech performance sports engineering, such as multi-degree-of-freedom dynamic test platforms, and next-generation wind tunnels.  Responsibilities include assisting in CAD design and analysis (e.g., FEA and/or CFD); liaising with potential suppliers and reviewing their manufacturing methods; overseeing the installation process and ensuring quality control; collaborating with the technical team to conduct experiments; and performing any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Post-doctoral Fellow / Research Assistant (Job no. 8668)

The Aerodynamics and Acoustics Facility at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is seeking highly motivated and talented individuals to join its team as Post-doctoral Fellow(s) or Research Assistant(s).

The successful candidate will utilize one of the world’s most powerful supercomputer clusters and develop Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) solutions for various sports-aerodynamics projects.  Responsibilities include establishing CFD training (for Research Assistant); pre-processing CAD geometries for CFD simulations; performing large-scale CFD simulations (e.g., > 256 CPUs); collaborating with the team to evaluate the CFD results and perform experimental validation, and performing any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

The successful candidate will conduct wind tunnel experiments in Hong Kong’s most advanced aerodynamic testing facilities, and work with the performance sports engineering team.  Responsibilities include conducting wind tunnel experiments in the large low-speed wind tunnel; designing and manufacturing customized equipment to facilitate the wind tunnel experiments; designing and testing data acquisition software/procedures; collaborating with other team members and scientists; and performing any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Technical Officer (Job no. 8371)

The Aerodynamics and Acoustics Facility (https://aaf.ust.hk) at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is looking for a high caliber candidate to fill the position of Technical Officer.  The Facility has an advanced and large low-speed wind tunnel, as well as two smaller wind tunnels for teaching and research work.  The Facility is also the center of Hong Kong’s largest acoustic testing laboratories, which consists of a large anechoic chamber, a large reverberation chamber, and a novel acoustics-fluids testing platform.  These facilities are central to a variety of R&D projects and provide an exciting and technically stimulating work environment for users.

The appointee will be responsible for:

  1. reviewing the use and maintenance of laboratory equipment (e.g., the wind tunnel, delicate and sensitive sensors, and intricate wind tunnel models);
  2. providing assistance to the faculty members and research staff/students in executing their projects (e.g., assist with design work, manufacturing processes, and experiment setup/installation); and
  3. rendering technical assistance to the routine operation of the laboratories.

Engineer (Job no. 8185)

HKUST possesses a large multi-purpose low speed wind tunnel, an anechoic chamber, a reverberation chamber, and other smaller flow and fluid-acoustic facilities, serving the wide research communities locally and beyond. The Facility is looking for a high caliber candidate to fill the position of Engineer. Reporting to the Director of AAF, the appointee will be required to serve as aerodynamics and acoustics expert for the AAF to:

  • Lead the planning and execution of aerodynamic and acoustic tests to achieve high-quality datasets in an efficient manner and verify and validate datasets, monitor progress, and troubleshoot; Oversee model fabrication and model instrumentation by AAF staff and/or subcontractors to ensure high quality build;
  • Develop analysis tools, perform mathematical modelling, and provide design support on projects related to sports engineering, aerodynamic testing, civil engineering, and automotive engineering;
  • Perform numerical simulations that may go alongside experimental test procedures;
  • Procure equipment necessary to support testing capabilities or enhance laboratory quality;
  • Identify potential improvements in test procedures to streamline test operations; and
  • Support technical output of the Facility through technical communications (publications, presentations, etc.).

The appointee will also serve as primary customer interface to:

  • Troubleshoot and provide technical support with data acquisition, signal processing, database organization and management;
  • Liaise with AAF clients and manage customer relations; and
  • Provide preliminary analysis data by means of numerical simulations (e.g. CFD and CAA).

The appointee may be required to work overtime.
